Review: Disco 1.0.2

CD and DVD burning is one of those utilities you either find yourself content using the built in functionality of the operating system or quickly outgrow it.  OS X’s burning functionality is spread across multiple applications. Use Finder to burn files, Disk Utility to open and burn ISO or DMG images to disc and if you want to create a music CD from a collection of MP3 or AAC files, use iTunes which, as we all know, does not verify burned discs to ensure they’re coaster-free.

On the commercial side of things, the established burning application for years has been Roxio’s Toast, a fine, though perhaps bit overstuffed with features, program if all you’re looking to do is create disc image files or burn your data off to DVD for long term storage.

Disco steps in quite comfortably between the two extremes to provide all those features plus a couple extras in one, convenient, interface. [Read more…]

For Mac Eyes Only News: Apple Delays Leopard Until October

We’ll talk about this on our next show of course, but Apple just released a statement that Leopard will be delayed until October and the primary culprit is not Vista compatibility as previously rumored, but…

…the iPhone.

we had to borrow some key software engineering and QA resources from our Mac OS X team, and as a result we will not be able to release Leopard at our Worldwide Developers Conference in early June as planned.”

They say Leopard WILL be feature complete by WWDC, a near final version demoed, and beta copies will be handed out to developers to pound on before Leopard is released from its cage in October.

Apple concludes with:

“We think it will be well worth the wait. Life often presents tradeoffs, and in this case we’re sure we’ve made the right ones.”

Really Apple (née Computer) Inc?

If we are to take this with a silver lining, we’ll content ourselves by saying that Leopard will be stable, safe and bug free by then … right?

No word on how this will affect iLife ’07 or iWork ’07, but we can only presume they will be held until October as well — and very likely renamed.

For Mac Eyes Only News: Get A Mac For Security

Apple released a hilarious new Get a Mac commercial that precisely encapsulates the point of my rant yesterday.

Entitled “Security”, this ad reminds us just how flimsy Microsoft’s new enhanced security is within Vista. As I mentioned in For Mac Eyes Only, when it boils right down to it, all the user has to do is “turn off” the warnings and they’re left with nothing more than “warmed-over” Windows XP.

So sad…

For Mac Eyes Only News: iPod Shuffle in Living Color

You may not want to wait until next week’s episode to hear about this one. The iPod Shuffle is now available in 5 new colors and ready to brighten the lapel or coin pocket of some clothing near you.

Mimicking the iPod nano’s color scheme, the Shuffle goes one better by substituting Orange for the nano’s black.

I like orange.

So, with Valentine’s Day just a couple weeks away, you might want to pick one up for your sweetie — sorry, no red.
